Turkey Criticizes Greece Over Pontus Claims, Calls for Respect of History

(MENAFN) Türkiye on Tuesday criticizes Greece over statements and commemorations linked to the Pontus issue, urging Athens to avoid what it describes as “distorting history” and to focus instead on maintaining peaceful bilateral relations, according to reports.

The Turkish Foreign Ministry says May 19 marks the arrival of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in Samsun in 1919, an event that led to the launch of the Turkish War of Independence against occupying forces, including Greece. The date is commemorated in Türkiye as Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.

The ministry accuses Greece of promoting what it calls “groundless allegations” through legislation adopted in 1994 regarding the Pontus issue, and claims that such narratives are also being included in parts of the Greek education system.

“Greece should cease exploiting history for political concerns,” the statement says.

According to reports, the ministry also argues that renewed references to the Pontus claims are an attempt to reinterpret historical events and to obscure past military developments during the conflict in Anatolia.
